At this point your next two assignments will be very customized to you and your skill level. I will be looking at your specific work over the last several months, re-reviewing all your assignments, and honing-in on areas where I feel you really need to bring your best game. For instance, if I think you still need to perfect your value-system skills, soft edges work, composition or design know-how, etc., then you should count on those techniques being a required part of Assignments 7 and 8.
So, I will be sending you your very personalized next assignment shortly. You have come extremely far in the Yarnell Certification Program, and I am very proud of your work! However, you should expect to be challenged even more going forward. I want you to be the Best you can Be!
Good luck and God Bless You!
Recommended instructional material from Yarnell School Online:
The instructional material we have on YSO will be a benefit for certain techniques – and by now you should have a feel for what snippets and paintings there can best enable you. We continue to advise you to take full advantage of those.
However, know that because the Category Landscape II is so advanced and because this is an extremely advanced painting, we do not have instructional material to match up to these assignments. To explain, once you reach this level, we assume that you already have gained and retained the knowledge, ability, and techniques at a level that will help propel you in getting through these painting assignments.
Hey, Ken, Appreciate your efforts on this painting --- but there seems to be a miscommunication on how it needs to be done. So, I want you to move on to assignment #8 – which I will write out for you in next few days and send to you. Then when you come in May and we have time together, we can work on Assignment #7 together. Thank you, Jerry
Hey Gail - Hope all is well with you and you are enjoying the winter. Thanks for re-submitting this assignment. The corrections that I suggested for you to do really did help bring the painting into technical compilance . So Gail since you are one of my advanced students I dont want to put you thru the hassle of re doing anything that you need to re-submitt. However I do want to point out a couple of things that need to be corrected and just trust you to do it on your own. So getting back to the value system you did really well until you got to the buildings. They are too dark. If you notice the front section of fence and large dead tree are all the same value. So all you need to do is create a soft medium gray /wash and slightly wash it over the buildings to lighten them by about two values. This will push them back further into the painting creating more depth. One more thing. Its always important to try and repeat some of the sky tones some where else in the painting. My suggestion is put some of the warmer tones as highlights on the large dead tree, and or maybe the buildings and perhaps in the water. Just be carefull not to over do it. Other than that this turned out to be a really nice painting painting.
Hey Gail thanks for submitting this assignment. At first glance I really like the basic concept of the composition, color scheme and value system however there are a few things that you need to change to make it technically correct and balanced. First I really like the sky tones they are nice and soft and warm. The mountains are good but are too busy. You dont need so many peaks they over power the composition. So try to get rid of so many small peaks and make larger peaks. The color scheme is fine. Now the other thing is you have what is called a split composition. Similar with what you had wrong with the last painting you did. You have way too much open space in the center of the painting with no connection to the left side(pine trees) and right side buildings, fenc, and road. You need to connect the two sides together either by curving the road and fence further into the center of the painting then wrapping around the back of the buildings. Or you could carefully add more pine trees to connect to the right side. Frankly it would look better if you moved the road and fence. The next thing is the silos are too bright green and that green tone is not repeated any where else in the painting. So you need to either make the silos more gray or add more of that green tone into some of the pine trees. Now you need to add a little bit of the sky color in the water to warm it up and make it color balanced. The fence looks good except the distant posts are too fat and stumpy. They need to be a little bit more narrow. The rust colored weeds look great. The pine trees are good and the large dead tree is good also. So Gail go ahead and make these adjustments then ill take a look at it and we can go from there . Good luck , God bless you and stay inspired.
