YARNELL STUDIO & SCHOOL OF FINE ART LLC
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) – Yarnell Certified Artist Program (YCAP)

Overall, how does the YCAP process work?
This program is a contract between you and the YARNELL STUDIO & SCHOOL OF FINE ART LLC. You agree to complete the 8 assignments within a maximum of two years and Jerry will evaluate and grade each assignment, providing you with feedback on any needed improvements and areas that are well done. Of course, we hope that you are able to complete the assignments much sooner since there are many more certification categories available for you.

The program process is VERY EASY TO FOLLOW, and COMPLETELY ADMINISTERED ONLINE. Once you’ve successfully completed the registration process, signed, and returned (via email or fax) your Terms & Conditions form, we will activate your access. At that point you will login to see your first painting assignment. Once you’ve completed your assignment, you will upload your photo of that painting via YarnellSchool.com. Jerry will then review and critique your painting, assess a score from 1-10, and provide you feedback. You must score 7 or higher to move to the next Painting Assignment. Assignments with scores of less than 7 must be reworked based on the feedback you will receive from Jerry via YarnellSchool.com site. You will follow the same process when you have reworked your painting (i.e., re-photograph and re-upload) and again Jerry will assess, score, and provide feedback.
Please refer to the Basic Certification flow chart which depicts the process visually.
How will I know the key aspects Jerry will be using for scoring my painting assignments?
You will have a detailed list from Jerry of the specific components he’ll be looking for in your painting. As well he will point you to recommended materials available both on Yarnell School Online as well as via DVD format from the online store of YarnellSchool.com. Note: Cost of DVDs and Yarnell School Online (YSO) membership is not included in the cost of YCAP.

Am I required to be a Yarnell School Online (YSO) member?
Jerry highly recommends you become a YSO member as the instructional materials available to you on YSO will give you a significant advantage and prove invaluable as you do your painting assignments. Think of YSO as your text book, and the YCAP as the location where you get your assignments, grades, and feedback. YSO is an extremely affordable resource.

What art supplies are required?
Set yourself up for success by using only fine-art tools that Jerry has selected and designed over his 30+ years of teaching fine art – the exact same tools that he uses every day as well. We recommend the Beginner Acrylic Kit (SKU # PTBS) which is available for purchase in the online store of YarnellSchool.com. Some of you may already have items Jerry recommends, i.e., his signature brushes – if not we highly recommend you purchase a set of both the acrylic brushes as well as the Dynasty set. You want to use only professional grade (i.e., Liquitex Heavy Body Acrylic) paints. Jerry’s palette sheet and supply list is available from the FAQ tab of YarnellSchool.com or

As well you can view the key supplies which Jerry recommends by clicking here: http://www.yarnellschool.com/pdf/YCAP Art Product UsagePDF.pdf

Can I substitute certain paints, brushes, and other supplies instead of what YARNELL STUDIO & SCHOOL OF FINE ART recommends?

I encourage you to use the most professional products. This is not a gimmick or a trick to encourage you to use my brushes or professional-level paints. I am teaching “fine art” … not craft painting, method-style painting, etc. This is not to say those methods are “wrong” … but it is to say this is NOT what this program or the YARNELL SCHOOL OF FINE ART is founded upon. Using inferior paints and brushes can be a nightmare for teachers and very discouraging for students. We at the YARNELL SCHOOL OF FINE ART --- and you as one of my students (and perhaps one day one of our instructors) – ask that you please set yourself up for success by using the products that we recommend. We have a fully stocked online store where you can purchase these products. Using proper products will make learning much easier and much more FUN! Jerry Yarnell

Will I get a certificate each time I score 7 or above on a painting assignment and move to the next painting assignment?
Yes, you will! You will receive a certificate in acknowledgement of your successful completion of each painting assignment with a score of 7 or above. You will also receive a beautiful, framed and matted Certificate upon successful completion of the entire YCAP Category for which you were registered.

Can I register for more than one YCAP “Category” at a time?
Yes, but only after you successfully complete the Landscape I category FIRST -- then you can register for any additional categories. Landscape I is the prerequisite for Landscape II, Birds I, Animals I, Buildings & Cityscapes I, and Still Life I. Landscape I will also be a prerequisite for anyone who wants to become a future Yarnell Certified™ Instructor.

Is the Yarnell Certified Instructor Program (YCIP) available now as well?
Not just yet but we will be launching the instructor phase (YCIP) in a few months. Keep in mind, Landscape I Category will also be a prerequisite for anyone who wants to become a Yarnell Certified™ Instructor in the future so it would be a good idea to get Landscape I under your belt if you are planning to move into the Instructor Program.

Is there a way I can work on my certification assignment paintings at Jerry’s studio during his standard ‘open’ workshops and/or scheduled private lessons? Also, can I schedule one of Jerry’s Critique-for-Fee sessions to get his live feedback?
Yes, you are very welcome to come to Jerry’s studio with one of your painting assignments. However, the cost of these classes would be in addition to the cost of the YCAP program. As well, you must still participate online to fulfill the requirements of the YCAP program. Classes at the studio require pre-registration and a deposit to hold your space.

Yes, you can schedule a Critique-for-Fee session which is $35 for a 15-minute feedback session with Jerry. The cost of this session is in addition to the cost of the YCAP Program. Jerry’s intention is to make any avenues available to you that he can so that your experience in the YCAP program is incredible!

Can I participate in the YCAP without using a computer and by submitting photos of my painting assignments through the mail?

All categories of the YCAP certification activities are conducted online. Therefore students must either (1) be computer literate, i.e.,  knowledgeable in the use of uploading their own photo files as well as possessing the ability to access the YCAP site, and remember access (logins), access assignments, etc., or (2) have ready access to someone who is computer-literate who will be immediately accessible to you throughout your YCAP studies. COMPUTER LITERACY IS A PREREQUISITE OF YCAP. YARNELL will not provide basic computer training; students are expected to be computer literate in order to participate in the YCAP. No assignments will be accepted via US mail or hand-delivered.
Is a computer system required to be a part of the YCAP?
Yes. No assignments will be accepted manually, i.e., via US mail or hand-delivered.

What computer system (hardware, software) is recommended? Can I access the system from my iPad?

The YarnellSchool.com website including YCAP works in all major browsers. They also work in desktops, laptops, mobile phones, tablets, and other devices that you can browse internet with. You can access all of YarnellSchool.com website using your iPhone and iPad as well. However, be advised that due to limitations in some prior versions of Mobile Safari browser, uploading images from websites does not work. Safari that comes with iOS 6.0 offers image uploading capability. So, in order for you to upload Painting Assignments using iPad or iPhone, you must have iOS 6 or later as your operating system.

What about the photos of our painting assignments – what specific guidelines do you have for us in preparation for uploading?

You will submit your painting photos unframed. Take the time to get good quality shots. Some students have placed their paintings using a black or dark back-drop --- making the paintings ‘pop’ more in the photographs. Picture file size should be no larger than 3 MB. You may use a photo editing program to correct the color, brightness, intensity and contrast as necessary and to crop out any background. A couple of free photo editing programs include IrfanView and GIMP. PhotoShop is quite good but is also expensive.

Will Jerry be available to me if I have questions?
You will submit your questions online via the YCAP infrastructure. There is a significant list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) also on YarnellSchool.com that you have access to 24/7. Students enrolled in YCAP can register for a “Critique-for-Fee” session with Jerry via the “Critique Session” tab of YarnellSchool.com and can also attend workshops at the Yarnell Studio in person wherein they can work on YCAP painting assignments. However the cost of the Critique for Fee and/or the workshops at the Yarnell Studio are separate, are not a part of the YCAP program, and are a separate cost to the student.
Can I use the YCAP materials for reasons other than my own YCAP studies?
The Yarnell Certified Artist and Yarnell Certified Instructor Programs and materials are trademarked. None of the YCAP contents, instructional materials, and painting assignments can be used or reproduced for any commercial purposes. Students may not place any of their completed painting assignments on the Internet or on any social media networks.
Will Yarnell be using some of my submitted painting assignments in any way?
All student content, photos, and painting assignments may be used by YARNELL STUDIO & SCHOOL OF FINE ART LLCto highlight and showcase your work and talent on YarnellSchool.com, face book, print materials, etc.  Yarnell reserves the right to use all your contents royalty free.
Why am I not allowed to sell or post on the Internet my paintings from the YCAP?
The painting assignments are very carefully designed and selected so that successful completion of all of them will demonstrate that you have attained a high level of proficiency in the techniques required for mastery of the subject category. As such, they have been copyrighted so that we cannot allow any reproduction of the paintings. Remember that once you have attained this level of mastery, you will be able to create and sell your own versions of these scenes.  Unlike the subject images Jerry uses in his books, DVDs, Yarnell School Online, and TV show for teaching which he freely allows students to use in their own paintings, the images associated with YCAP are not the same and not to be copied in any way outside of the YCAP Program.

How is the YCAP different from the Yarnell School Online (YSO)?
These two programs are very different. Under the YCAP the student is committing to complete the eight assignments within two years and the YARNELL STUDIO & SCHOOL OF FINE ART LLC is agreeing to evaluate, grade and comment on each assignment.   The result of the YCAP will be a certification that the student has attained a level of proficiency that meets Jerry Yarnell’s standards of fine art. The YSO is a teaching program that can be started and stopped at any time and there is no evaluation of your work unless you use Jerry’s Critique-for-Fee Program.

How often will I be able to access the YarnellSchool.com/YCAP website?
Barring any unforeseen interruptions in service or scheduled maintenance, you will have 24/7 access to YarnellSchool.com/YCAP. Although Yarnell aims to offer you the best service and experience possible, Yarnell makes no promise that the services available at YCAP will always meet your requirements or expectations. Yarnell cannot guarantee that the Service will be always fault-free. If a fault or issue occurs with the Service, you should report it to ycp@yarnellschool.com and Yarnell will make our best effort in the most reasonable time and manner. Your access to YCAP may be occasionally restricted to allow for repairs, maintenance, or the introduction of new facilities or services. Yarnell will post notice for scheduled repair and maintenance of service. Yarnell will attempt to restore the Service as soon as Yarnell reasonably can.
How quickly can I get registered and begin the YCAP?
This program is a contractual agreement between you and the YARNELL STUDIO & SCHOOL OF FINE ART LLC. You agree to complete the 8 assignments within a maximum of two years and Jerry will evaluate and grade each assignment, providing you with feedback on any needed improvements and areas that are well done. Of course, we hope that you are able to complete the assignments much sooner since there are many more Certification Categories available for you.
Everything is accomplished online. So once you have enrolled, paid your tuition, and returned your terms & conditions form, you are ready to begin your adventure! Simply follow the instructions and recommended study material prompts for your first assignment. Then pick up your paints and brushes and complete Painting Assignment #1.

How does it work if I successfully complete the YCAP Landscape I Category and then want to become a
Yarnell Certified Instructor?

Then you can apply for the Yarnell Certified™ Instructor Program (YCIP). The YCIP will be launched later this year and will include a more rigorous application process, i.e., Jerry will want to see some of your work prior to your being accepted into the YCIP.

What makes the YCAP different from any of the programs of this type?

The simple difference is Jerry strictly teaches “fine art” techniques which do not include patterns. Rather fine art focuses on learning the technical aspects of painting (negative space, composition, perspective, eye stoppers, value systems, color-mixing, etc., ) so that as an artist you can develop your own style --incorporating these techniques into your own unique compositions from real life instead of copying or using a pattern.
Do I have to become a teacher and actively teach – if I want to take the Yarnell Certified Instructor Program?
No, you do not. We have already had this request from many students who indicate they want to take the entire program just for personal knowledge and advancement but may or may not actually teach afterwards.

What is the difference in becoming a Certified Artist versus Yarnell Certified Instructor?
Certified artists want to improve their painting skills and increase their opportunities at art shows, galleries, as well as increase their bio credentials. Certified Instructors want the same however they also want to supplement their income by being able to teach Yarnell techniques under the Yarnell Brand. Yarnell Certified™ Instructors will be positioned to receive student referrals direct from Jerry Yarnell thus expanding their portfolio and ability to reach a larger student base. The Yarnell Studio & School of Fine Art receives student requests constantly for lessons in various parts of the Country and even the World. Travel to all these requested locations is not possible for Jerry, so as a Yarnell™ Certified Instructor, this is a huge opportunity.

What mediums can I be certified in?
All of Jerry’s instructions can be applied to oil or acrylic, and both are being offered through the YCAP program.
What subjects can I be certified in?
Currently we are offering the following Certification Categories: Landscape I (Beginner to Intermediate), Landscape II (Intermediate to Advanced), Birds I, Animals I, Buildings & Cityscapes I, and Still Life I. Jerry plans to add Figures & Portraits I at a later date.

How much does the program cost to be certified?
Each Certification Category is $1950.00. The cost of the Instructor Certification will be announced at a later date.

Where do I go for the certification process?
All of the Yarnell Certified™ Artist Program (YCAP) Categories are administered online. Students who are accepted into the Yarnell Certified™ Instructor Program (once launched) will be required to attend training at the Yarnell Oklahoma Studio and will also be required to complete assignments online.
